We were shocked and greatly saddened to learn of Burkhard’s passing in September.
We first met Burkhard and his wife Ingrid on the shore of Williams Lake and chatted with them many times in the coves they loved.
Several years ago Burkhard asked if he could launch his large wooden canoe from our place for his measurements of water quality out in the deepest parts of the lake. His visits became a regular occurance each year in the cool of the autumn. His measurements contributed to the historic data enabling the WLCC to track changes to Williams Lake caused by development and road salt. Burkhard loved to hike and document the flora, fauna and features of the Backlands, and he happily supplied his trail route and GPS coordinates when we were mapping a birding trail for the WLCC. He was a true friend of Williams Lake and the Backlands.
Burkhard was dedicated to the lake and to all the natural legacies of Nova Scotia. His obituary covers his lifelong studies of the natural world.
We will miss his relaxed and casual manner deeply, and we want to express our deep condolences to Ingrid, his family, friends, and his students who were fortunate to experience his love and care for the natural world.
