The executive of the Williams Lake Conservation Company (WLCC) is concerned about the recent announcement that 136 acres of land on the southwest end of Williams Lake are for sale (see map). Currently, this land is wilderness and, in addition to containing the major stream that supplies water to Williams Lake from Colpitt Lake, represents almost one-quarter of the shoreline of Williams Lake. These lands are adjacent to Halifax’s new Urban Wilderness Park and with the Park provide a vital wildlife corridor and buffer that protects the water quality and quantity in Willliams and Colpitt Lakes. We are in the process of gathering as much information as we can about this land – its natural attributes as well as its zoning. We are also reaching out to other organizations who are interested in the area including the Nature Conservancy of Canada. While we are concerned about the potential of development, we also view this as an opportunity to provide long-term protection for the watershed and its flora and fauna, protection that will become even more critical in light of predicted climate change.
