Williams Lake Conservation Company (WLCC) Director Dr. Melanie Dobson has graphed the Williams Lake water levels for this year to August and over the past few summers for comparison. According to her report: “We were lucky the lake started off higher in the spring this year and recent rains have helped.”

Dr. Dobson also provided water quality test results and commented, “In other good news, the Cunard beach has not had to be closed due to blue-green algae blooms this summer. This might seem surprising given how hot and dry it has been. Apparently Kidston Lake was closed for that reason earlier this summer. I can’t help but wonder if the lack of rain going into the storm drains and people not watering or fertilizing their lawns might have kept the run-off into Williams lake and Cunard Pond less enriching than in prior hot summers [emphasis added].
Summary WLCC water quality testing results
Sampling July 28, 2025
3 Sites:
* Colpitt Lake (near inflow from Governor’s Brook),
* Williams Lake (dam end),
* Williams Lake (Williams Lake Rd end)
- Bacterial levels very low at all 3 sites (total coliform and E.coli)
- Phosphate and nitrogen levels remain negligible at all 3 sites
- Colpitt Lake sample shows salinity has increased (see graph of conductivity, an
indication of salt content, below) (sodium and chloride levels were also elevated relative
to historic values for this sampling site). Note: flow from Governor’s Brook was minimal
on sampling day and Colpitt Lake level was lower than usual for late July) - Most other chemical tests show minimal change from previous few years
