Loonet hatched at Williams Lake

The pair of loons of Williams Lake have successfully hatched a chick

by: Katharine Studholme & Stephen Glazier

You may have heard about the lake’s newest resident: The William’s Lake Loons have hatched a (very cute) chick!

While you may want to see this little fluff ball up close, it is very important to keep your distance at this particularly vulnerable time in its life. Feeding and protecting the chick from predators is a full-time job for Mom and Dad while their chick is small. If the loons start vocalizing or change their swimming direction then you are likely too close, and you should not attempt to pursue them. This photo was taken with an 800mm telephoto lens and heavily cropped.

Stable water levels and a healthy lake chemistry are key to the loons’ reproductive success. Your support of WLCC’s work to monitor water quality and rebuild the dam helps ensure future generations of wildlife have the best chance at survival!

[Note: A baby loon is called a “loonlet“. Loons are known to be very good parents and are protective of their young]
