Baby Turtles Hatching at Williams Lake, Halifax
It’s that time of year! A member of the Williams Lake Conservation Company (WLCC) was notified by a local resident that newborn snapping turtles had been spotted on the road near Williams Lake. A call was put out, and members located the nest in time to watch a small miracle of nature, as a total of 59 baby turtles emerged from a tiny hole in a bare patch of ground.
Over the course of several hours, members and some interested passers-by successfully ferried the newly hatched baby turtles into the safety of Williams Lake before they could wander onto the road. This is especially important because snapping turtles are an endangered species.
Other snapping turtle nests will be hatching at this time, so please keep a careful watch out for tiny mud-coloured turtles in the vicinity of the lake, and get in touch with us as soon as possible through the “Contact Us” link here https://williamslakecc.org/contact-us/: We’ll soon be on the scene to help with rescue efforts.
