Our Williams Lake Conservation Company voluntary water testing campaign on Williams Lake is finished for this financial year. Our latest test results from Colpitt Lake, one of our main watershed tributaries indicates that it is healthy and swimmable. Our testing showed E. coli levels above the safe level for swimming at the east end of Williams Lake, and we immediately posted a “no-swim advisory’ when we reviewed the test results.
We test water quality of Williams and Colpitt Lake once per year, in the last week of July or first week of August. As part of HRM’s “LakeWatchers Program” our experienced volunteers also test Williams Lake twice a year, in the fall and spring for pH, water temperature and salt levels at different depths in the lake. HRM also monitors the supervised beach on Cunard Pond on Williams Lake daily during the summer months.
Water testing is expensive despite our sampling being done by experienced and unpaid WLCC volunteers. These samples are critically analyzed to Health Canada standards by a certified local laboratory. Our volunteers then record, track and monitor these results – continuously for the past 25 years! The WLCC board acts on these test results to continue to protect the lake and the HRM community which loves this lake.
