Each year during National Volunteer Week, the Halifax Regional Municipality holds an award ceremony to acknowledge and honour the contributions of exceptional volunteers and dedicated volunteer organizations in HRM communities. Kathleen Hall of our Williams Lake community was recognized with an HRM 2022 Volunteer Award.
Get a chance to explore a part of the Shaw Wilderness Park, a new ecologically diverse green space that is 153-hectare in size. The walk will take you along the shores of Williams Lake, which is an urban, yet preciously wild lake. Fulton Lavender, a local bird identification expert from Williams Lake Conservation Company, will lead the walk, share his knowledge of key habitats for birds in this park, and share hints for your most effective bird-watching. Located on the edge of the Purcells Cove Backlands, this park is a home for many species of birds including the Common Loon, Bald Eagle, and numerous songbirds.
Several conservation-oriented groups in Spryfield have partnered to promote the appreciation and tradition of bird watching in the wilderness parks and community trails of Spryfield. The Williams Lake Conservation Company (WLCC) designed the “Sparrows Hawks Doves” (SHD) project and was awarded funding from the HRM Community Project Grants Program. A key goal for WLCC was to build new local alliances and to invite members of the Purcell’s Cove Backlands Coalition and the Urban Farm Museum Society of Spryfield to join in the field trips for the SHD’s bird survey. After many years of wondering when, and how, the crumbling dam on Williams Lake would be fixed, a new solution to the problem has been proposed. Hydrologists have completed a detailed study of the lake, and the land that underlays it, including the surrounding watershed. Their full report has more than a few surprises.
